\n Former President Donald Trump, who trails with women in recent national polls, participated in a Fox News town hall event on Tuesday in front of a female audience.\n <\/p>\n

\n He told a bunch of lies.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Republican presidential nominee made at least 19 false claims in the one-hour event that aired Wednesday morning \u2013 most of them debunked earlier in the campaign but some of them new, notably including an absurd claim that he is \u201cthe father of IVF.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump\u2019s falsehoods included repeat lies on the subjects of abortion, immigration, inflation and national security. Here is a fact check.\n <\/p>\n

\n Opinions on Roe v. Wade<\/strong>: Trump repeated his false claim that \u201ceverybody,\u201d even \u201cthe Democrats\u201d and \u201cthe liberals,\u201d wanted the Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision overturned and the power to set abortion policy left to individual states; he added, \u201cNobody wanted it to be in the federal government.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n It\u2019s not even close to true<\/a> that \u201ceverybody\u201d wanted Roe overturned or that \u201cthe Democrats\u201d did. A large majority of Americans and an overwhelming majority of Democrats wanted the Supreme Court to preserve Roe in 2022, according to numerous polls. Democratic support for Roe exceeded 80% in many polls and 90% in some polls.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump and in vitro fertilization (IVF)<\/strong>: Trump declared that he is entirely in favor of IVF. But Trump also falsely claimed, \u201cI\u2019m the father of IVF.\u201d This is just nonsense. The first child conceived through IVF was born in 1978; Trump, clearly, had nothing to do with it, and he said<\/a> in this same town hall answer that he only recently had IVF explained to him by a Republican senator.\n <\/p>\n

\n Harris\u2019 border role<\/strong>: Trump, criticizing his election opponent Vice President Kamala Harris, repeated his false claim that President Joe Biden \u201cmade her border czar.\u201d Biden never made Harris \u201cborder czar,\u201d a label the White House has always emphasized is inaccurate. In\u00a0reality<\/a>, Biden gave Harris a more limited immigration-related assignment in 2021, asking her to lead diplomacy with\u00a0El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras\u00a0in an attempt to address the conditions that prompted their citizens to try to migrate to the United States.\n <\/p>\n

\n Harris\u2019 border visits<\/strong>: Trump, speaking about Harris and the border, repeated his false claim that \u201cshe never even went there.\u201d Harris did go to the border as vice president,\u00a0in Texas in mid-2021<\/a> and then again in Arizona last month<\/a>;\u00a0many Republicans had criticized Harris prior to the 2021 visit<\/a>\u00a0for not having gone, and some later argued that she didn\u2019t go frequently enough, but the claim that she \u201cnever\u201d went has not been true for more than three years.\n <\/p>\n

\n An immigration chart and migration levels<\/strong>: Trump repeated his false claim that his favorite immigration chart \u2013 which he had fortunately turned his head to look at when a gunman tried to kill him at a campaign rally in July \u2013 shows that \u201cthe day I left office\u201d had the lowest level of border crossings.\n <\/p>\n

\n The chart doesn\u2019t show that. In fact, the arrow on the chart that Trump keeps saying points to a record-low level of southern border crossings on the day or week he left office actually points to\u00a0April 2020<\/a>, when Trump still had more than eight months left in his term and\u00a0global migration\u00a0had slowed to a trickle because of the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. After hitting a roughly three-year low (not an all-time low) in April 2020, migration numbers at the southern border increased each month through the end of Trump\u2019s term.\n <\/p>\n

\n The number of migrants<\/strong>: Trump, speaking about migration, repeated<\/a> his false claim that \u201c21 million people came in over the last three years, with them.\u201d Through August, the country had\u00a0recorded<\/a>\u00a0about 10.3 million nationwide \u201cencounters\u201d with migrants during the Biden-Harris administration, including millions who were rapidly expelled from the country; even adding in so-called \u201cgotaways\u201d who evaded detection,\u00a0estimated<\/a>\u00a0by House Republicans as being roughly 2 million, there\u2019s no way the total is \u201c21 million.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The border wall: <\/strong>Trump repeated his false claim that he built \u201c571 miles of wall\u201d on the southern border. That\u2019s a significant exaggeration; official government\u00a0data<\/a>\u00a0shows 458 miles were built under Trump \u2013 including both wall built where no barriers had existed before and wall built to replace previous barriers.<\/strong>\n <\/p>\n

\n Immigration judges<\/strong>: Trump, criticizing the fact that asylum seekers who arrive at the border have access to a US legal process before they are deported, falsely claimed that \u201cNo other country has judges at the border.\u201d In reality, the US is far from the only country to let asylum seekers make their case before judges or legal tribunals.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis statement is patently false,\u201d James Hathaway, then a law professor and Director of the Program in Refugee and Asylum Law at the University of Michigan, told this reporter during Trump\u2019s presidency<\/a> in response to a previous version of Trump\u2019s claim. \u201cIt is completely routine in other countries that, like the U.S., have signed the UN refugee treaties for asylum-seekers to have access to the domestic legal system to make a protection claim (and to be allowed in while the claim is pending).\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The legal status of immigrants in Springfield, Ohio<\/strong>: Trump falsely claimed, \u201cThey just dropped 30,000 illegal aliens in Springfield, Ohio.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n This is false in more than one way. While we don\u2019t know the immigration status of each and every Haitian immigrant in Springfield, the community is, on the whole, in the country lawfully. The Springfield city website says<\/a>, \u201cYES, Haitian immigrants are here legally, under the Immigration Parole Program. Once here, immigrants are then eligible to apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS).\u201d Republican Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine wrote in a New York Times op-ed about Springfield in September<\/a> that the Haitian immigrants \u201care there legally\u201d and that, as a Trump-Vance supporter, he is \u201csaddened\u201d by the candidates\u2019 disparagement of \u201cthe legal migrants living in Springfield.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Second, nobody \u201cdropped\u201d the immigrants in Springfield; the city\u2019s Haitian residents were not sent there by a government resettlement program<\/a>. Rather, they independently decided to move to the city<\/a> because of employment opportunities, affordable housing and the presence of a Haitian community, among other factors.\n <\/p>\n

\n And while there is no official tally of the number of immigrants in Springfield, Trump\u2019s \u201c30,000\u201d figure exceeds local estimates. The website for the city of Springfield says<\/a> there are an estimated 12,000 to 15,000 immigrants in the county that includes Springfield, where the total population is about 138,000<\/a>. Chris Cook, the county\u2019s health commissioner, said<\/a> in July that his team estimated the best number was 10,000 to 12,000 Haitian residents in the county.\n <\/p>\n

\n Immigrants in Springfield<\/strong>: Trump claimed that immigrants in Springfield are on \u201cprobation,\u201d and he added, \u201cProbation is for prisoners.\u201d This is false in two ways.\n <\/p>\n

\n First, Trump got his terms wrong. Many Haitians came into the country under a Biden-Harris administration parole<\/em> program<\/a> \u2013 not \u201cprobation\u201d \u2013 that gives permission to enter the US to vetted participants with US sponsors. And though the word \u201cparole\u201d is most commonly used in the context of criminal prisoners<\/a> who are let out early on certain conditions, in the context of immigration policy, \u201cparole\u201d does not mean that someone was let out of prison or had ever been in prison.\n <\/p>\n

\n Rather, as the federal government explains<\/a> on its website, \u201cThe Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) allows the secretary of homeland security to use their discretion to parole any noncitizen applying for admission into the United States temporarily for urgent humanitarian reasons or significant public benefit.\u201d The government has used the parole authority in the past<\/a> to grant entry to certain people fleeing crises in Cuba, Vietnam, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Lebanon and elsewhere.\n <\/p>\n

\n Current inflation: <\/strong>Trump tried to dismiss the decline in inflation over the last two years, and he falsely said, \u201cYou know when they say, \u2018Well, we\u2019re stopping inflation cause it went down now to 4.5%.\u2019 Well, 4.5% is very high, very high, meaning it\u2019s going up. Because it was at 3.\u201d The most recent available inflation rate at the time Trump spoke here was\u00a02.4%\u00a0in September<\/a>, not 4.5%, and this was the slowest rate since February 2021, not a jump from a lower rate.\n <\/p>\n

\n Cumulative inflation under Biden-Harris<\/strong>: Trump, speaking about total inflation under the Biden-Harris administration, said, \u201cThey say 21%, I think it\u2019s 50%.\u201d Trump\u2019s \u201c50%\u201d figure is baseless; cumulative inflation<\/a> during the Biden-Harris administration has indeed been about 21%.\n <\/p>\n

\n Inflation records under Biden-Harris<\/strong>: Trump repeated his false claim that the US has all-time record inflation under the Biden-Harris administration, saying, \u201cWe had the worst \u2013 they say it\u2019s in 48 years \u2013 I say ever. We had the worst inflation in the history of our country.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n The US\u00a0inflation rate<\/a>\u00a0hit a 40-year high in June 2022, when it was 9.1%, but that was not close to the all-time\u00a0record<\/a> of\u00a023.7%, set in 1920<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump\u2019s tax cuts<\/strong>: Trump repeated his false claim that \u201cI gave you the largest tax cuts in the history of our country.\u201d <\/strong>Expert analyses have\u00a0found<\/a>\u00a0that his 2017 tax cut law was not the largest in US history, either in percentage of gross domestic product or in inflation-adjusted dollars.<\/strong>\n <\/p>\n

\n Oil from Venezuela<\/strong>: Trump, criticizing Venezuelan oil, repeated his false claim that \u201cthe only refinery that can do it is in Houston, Texas.\u201d \u00a0Various other refineries in the US<\/a>\u00a0refine Venezuelan oil.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump and US troops in Syria<\/strong>: Trump falsely claimed, \u201cI got out of Syria.\u201d <\/strong>Trump reduced the US military presence in Syria but kept a contingent of troops there<\/a> throughout his presidency, even after he claimed<\/a> US troops were \u201cout\u201d (other than to protect oil sites, he added). Two US troops died in vehicle rollovers in Syria in 2020<\/a>, his last calendar year in office.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump and the defeat of ISIS<\/strong>: Trump, touting the defeat of the ISIS terror group, repeated his false claim that \u201cit was supposed to take literally five years and I did it in a month.\u201d Aside from the fact that Trump doesn\u2019t merit sole credit, the ISIS \u201ccaliphate\u201d was declared fully liberated\u00a0more than two years<\/a>\u00a0into his presidency.\n <\/p>\n

\n The US military presence in South Korea<\/strong>: Trump falsely claimed the US has \u201c42,000 soldiers\u201d in South Korea. Pentagon statistics<\/a>\u00a0<\/strong>show that Trump\u2019s figure is a significant exaggeration; as of June 30, 2024, there were 27,076 US military personnel in South Korea, including civilians working for the Department of Defense.\n <\/p>\n

\n South Korea\u2019s payments for the US military presence<\/strong>: Trump, speaking again of the US military presence in South Korea, falsely claimed that \u201cthey\u201d (South Korea) \u201cdon\u2019t pay,\u201d adding that Biden \u201csaid they don\u2019t pay anymore.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n In fact, South Korea agreed under Biden and Harris to pay more for the US military presence than it had been paying during the Trump era. Completing the negotiations that began under Trump, South Korea\u00a0agreed in March 2021 to a 2021 payment increase of 13.9%<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 meaning its payment that year would be about $1 billion \u2014 and then additional increases in 2022 through 2025 tied to increases in South Korea\u2019s defense budget.\n <\/p>\n

\n The two countries\u00a0reached a tentative agreement early this month<\/a>\u00a0for another deal covering the period from 2026 to 2030, which would begin with an 8.3% increase over the 2025 payment.<\/em>\n <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
