\n Donald Trump has pivoted to making his closing argument to voters heading into the final stretch of his race for the White House.\n <\/p>\n

\n Or so his campaign said Saturday as the former president took the stage in Latrobe, Pennsylvania.\n <\/p>\n

\n But shortly after walking out after a pro wrestler\u2019s entrance music, Trump swiftly veered into a rambling anecdote about the late Arnold Palmer, the golfing legend after whom the local airport was named. The story, which seemed to serve little purpose beyond invoking a regional icon and which lasted nearly 15 minutes, included tangents on Palmer\u2019s immense wealth and several offhand remarks about the Hall of Famer\u2019s naked body.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cArnold Palmer was all man, and I say that in all due respect to women, I love women\u2026 This man was strong and tough, and I refused to say it, but when he took showers with the other pros they came out of there, they said \u2018Oh my god. That\u2019s unbelievable,\u2019\u201d Trump said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The anecdote prompted one rallygoer to comment, \u201cI didn\u2019t expect to hear that tonight.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n From there, Trump invited to the stage Antonio\u00a0Brown, a former Pittsburgh Steeler star with a troubling legal\u00a0background<\/a>,\u00a0called his Democratic opponent Kamala Harris a \u201csh*t vice president,\u201d\u00a0and attacked mail-in voting as screens urged his supporters to cast absentee ballots early.\n <\/p>\n

\n Harris, asked about Trump\u2019s comments by the Rev. Al Sharpton on Sunday in a clip from a taped interview on MSNBC\u2019s \u201cPoliticsNation,\u201d said \u201cthe American people deserve so much better.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThat\u2019s how I come at it. And to your point, the president of the United States must set a standard. Not only for our nation but understanding the standard that we as a nation must set for the world,\u201d Harris said.\n <\/p>\n

\n He also tossed to a video of Harris voicing support for a ban on fracking, an issue of importance to many Keystone State voters.\n <\/p>\n

\n At other junctures, though, Trump interrupted his written remarks just as he seemed about to deliver the heart of his campaign\u2019s message, the kind that could be clipped for local Pittsburgh television stations to play on air.\n <\/p>\n

\n In between the vulgar and bizarre moments at Trump\u2019s rally Saturday were glimpses of a closing pitch. Trump, reading from a teleprompter, told the crowd, \u201cWith your support, we\u2019ll bring back our nation\u2019s strength, dominance, prosperity and pride. \u2026 This will be America\u2019s new golden age; 100 years from now the presidential election of 2024 will be looked upon as America\u2019s greatest victory.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThis election is a choice between whether we will have an incredible four more years of failure \u2014 such a horrible four years. Everything they touch turns to\u2014\u201d Trump said, pausing.\n <\/p>\n

\n The crowd yelled back the corresponding expletive.\n <\/p>\n

\n The rally kicked off two days of appearances by Trump in Pennsylvania, a battleground that both campaigns have prioritized both on the airwaves and in their schedules. Trump on Saturday will hold a town hall outside of Philadelphia. He is also planning to attend the Pittsburgh Steelers game and\u00a0stop by a McDonald\u2019s<\/a>\u00a0to work as a fry cook \u2014 a visit intended to troll Harris\u2019 work experience at the Golden Arches.\n <\/p>\n

\n Ahead of the Latrobe event, Trump\u2019s campaign suggested the former president would begin to tailor his message to match the urgency of the moment and a contrast of the two candidates.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cToday\u2019s remarks I do think are important because it\u2019s the beginning of that framing,\u201d said Jason Miller, a top adviser to Trump. His pitch will be delivered in full at a planned rally at Madison Square Garden in one week, Miller added.\n <\/p>\n

\n There was little, though, to differentiate Trump\u2019s remarks from dozens of speeches he has delivered over the course of the campaign. He railed against migrants and the mental competency of his opponents. He complained about the legal cases against him as an ex-president and the investigation into Russian election interference that dogged the early years of his presidency.\n <\/p>\n

\n Saturday\u2019s erratic display \u2014 performed in front of a smaller-than-usual crowd that lacked energy during the pre-program \u2014 comes on the heels of a series of recent appearances that have deviated from expectations.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump\u2019s rally in Detroit notably failed to fill the venue his campaign booked and when he took the stage, Trump was interrupted by technical issues with his microphone. The former president stood awkwardly by the lectern waiting for it to get fixed and then vowed to stiff the contractor that provided the sound system.\n <\/p>\n

\n Earlier in the week, Trump decided to stop fielding questions at\u00a0a town hall<\/a>\u00a0after a member of his audience suffered a medical episode. Instead, he called out songs to be played over the sound system as he swayed and waved his arms on the stage and then left after 40 minutes without taking any more questions.\n <\/p>\n

\n The incidents played into recent attacks from Harris and her allies, who have argued Trump has grown unhinged and less stable in the final days of the race. They have also seized on Trump\u2019s decision to cancel high-profile interviews with \u201c60 Minutes\u201d and CNBC as evidence that the former president\u2019s travel schedule has caught up to the 78-year-old former president.\n <\/p>\n

\n Speaking in Detroit on Friday, Trump pushed back against the suggestion he has lost a step.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI\u2019ve gone 48 days now without a rest and I\u2019ve got that loser who doesn\u2019t have the energy of a rabbit,\u201d he said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The next day in Latrobe, he spoke for about an hour and 40 minutes \u2014 a public demonstration of his capacity to soldier on.\n <\/p>\n

\n Still, Trump looked ahead to the moment when he could put his third White House bid in the rearview mirror.\n <\/p>\n
