EPISODE 7 \u2013 The Call I Shouldn\u2019t Have Picked<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The call came in the afternoon, on a day that felt ordinary.<\/p>\n

Unknown number.<\/p>\n

I almost didn\u2019t pick it. I rarely answered numbers I didn\u2019t recognize. Too many people had already disappointed me. But something \u2014 curiosity, maybe exhaustion \u2014 made me swipe the screen.<\/p>\n

The voice on the other end was calm. Too calm.<\/p>\n

He greeted me by name. Not just Nkiru<\/em>, but Nkiruka<\/em>. My full name.<\/p>\n

That alone made my heart skip.<\/p>\n

He said he was a family friend. Someone who had known my parents for a long time. He spoke respectfully, carefully, like someone who didn\u2019t want to scare me.<\/p>\n

At first, I gave him short answers. I didn\u2019t trust him. How did he get my number? Why now?<\/p>\n

He spoke like someone who already understood my frustration.<\/p>\n

Before the call ended, he told me to think about what he said. He said he would call again.<\/p>\n
