\n Donald Trump called Democratic Reps. Adam Schiff and Nancy Pelosi each \u201can enemy from within,\u201d even as the former president\u2019s Republican allies attempt to argue that his previous comments labeling political opponents <\/a>as such are being misinterpreted.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThese are bad people. We have a lot of bad people. But when you look at \u2018Shifty Schiff\u2019 and some of the others, yeah, they are, to me, the enemy from within,\u201d Trump said in an interview on Fox News\u2019 \u201cMediaBuzz\u201d that aired Sunday.\n <\/p>\n

\n Fox News\u2019 Howard Kurtz gave Trump an opportunity to clarify \u2014 \u201cHe\u2019s a political opponent of yours, but is he an enemy?\u201d \u2014 to which Trump responded, \u201cOf course he\u2019s an enemy, he\u2019s an enemy.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Schiff responded in a social media post<\/a> Sunday, saying, \u201cThere is no justification for such dictatorial behavior. Except dictatorial ambition.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump also called Pelosi an \u201cenemy from within,\u201d falsely claiming the then-speaker of the House had the opportunity to protect the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI think Nancy Pelosi is an enemy from within,\u201d he said. \u201cShe was supposed to protect the Capitol.\u201d He also falsely claimed that he \u201coffered her 10,000 National Guard\u201d and that the California Democrat \u201cdidn\u2019t take them.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n In response to Trump\u2019s comments, Pelosi\u2019s office said the former president\u00a0\u201cis showing himself to be increasingly unhinged and unstable.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIn talking about turning our military on his political opponents and the American people, Donald Trump is showing once again why his election would be a disaster for our country and our democracy,\u201d Ian Krager, a spokesperson for Pelosi, said in a statement.\n <\/p>\n

\n The former president\u2019s claims about January 6 are false<\/a>, CNN has previously reported. The speaker of the House is not in charge of Capitol security, which is the responsibility of the Capitol Police Board, which oversees the US Capitol Police and approves requests for National Guard assistance.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump\u2019s former acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller also told lawmakers that he was never given a formal order<\/a> by Trump to have 10,000 troops ready to be sent to the Capitol on January 6. \u201cThere was no direct, there was no order from the president,\u201d Miller said.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump, in a separate interview on Fox News\u2019 \u201cSunday Morning Futures\u201d last week, had suggested using the military<\/a> to handle what he called \u201cthe enemy from within\u201d on Election Day. \u201cI think the bigger problem is the enemy from within, not even the people that have come in and destroying our country.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWe have some very bad people. We have some sick people. Radical-left lunatics,\u201d Trump told host Maria Bartiromo in that interview, adding later, \u201cI think it should be very easily handled by, if necessary, by National Guard, or if really necessary, by the military, because they can\u2019t let that happen.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019 campaign has seized on Trump\u2019s remarks<\/a> as it uses the former president\u2019s own words and those of his former aides to cast him as dangerous and unstable.<\/a> Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, have highlighted the \u201cenemy from within\u201d comments at rallies across the country, and the campaign has released a new ad featuring the former president\u2019s remarks.\n <\/p>\n

\n In the days since, the former president\u2019s GOP allies have sought to argue that Trump wasn\u2019t actually talking about political opponents and that his statement had been misinterpreted.\n <\/p>\n

\n Earlier Sunday, for example, House Speaker Mike Johnson first argued that the former president was referring to criminal or transnational gangs.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWhat he\u2019s talking about is marauding gangs,\u201d Johnson told CNN\u2019s Jake Tapper on \u201cState of the Union\u201d when asked about Trump\u2019s suggestion of using the military against the \u201cenemy from within.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n But when Tapper pushed back, saying that Trump had been referring to Democrats like Schiff, Johnson said Trump was not talking about using the military on political opponents.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI did not hear President Trump in that clip say he\u2019s going to sic the military on Adam Schiff. That\u2019s not what he\u2019s saying. You got two different clips in two different contexts,\u201d Johnson said.\n <\/p>\n

\n The Louisiana Republican added later: \u201cHe\u2019s not Jake, no, he\u2019s not. No. He\u2019s talking about using the National Guard and the military to keep the peace in our streets.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n And Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin last week told Tapper<\/a>: \u201cI guess what I want to just make very clear is that it\u2019s my belief that what former President Trump is talking about are the people that are coming over the border, that, in fact, are committing crimes, that are bringing drugs, that are trafficking humans, and that are turning every state into a border state.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Tapper pointed out that Trump was not talking about migrants, but instead the \u201cradical left.\u201d Tapper also referred to Trump specifically naming Schiff<\/a> later in last week\u2019s interview, with the former president saying that while he can handle foreign adversaries, what is \u201ctougher to handle are these lunatics that we have inside like Adam Schiff \u2026 who\u2019s a total sleazebag, is going to become a senator. But I call him the enemy from within.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump stands by saying January 6 was \u2018day of love\u2019
\n<\/h2>\n

\n During Trump\u2019s interview Sunday on \u201cMediaBuzz,\u201d Kurtz challenged Trump on his characterization of January 6, 2021, as a \u201cday of love,\u201d a statement the former president stood by, insisting that \u201cthere was a beauty and love to it that I\u2019ve never seen before\u201d at the rally.\n <\/p>\n

\n He also falsely claimed that law enforcement was \u201cushering\u201d protesters into the US Capitol that day. CNN has previously reported<\/a> that about 140 police officers were assaulted while trying to stop the mob from breaching the Capitol.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cThere was nobody killed here. Nobody had guns here either,\u201d Trump said, to which Kurtz responded: \u201cThere were people with guns.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump replied: \u201cReally? I have not heard that at all,\u201d adding, \u201cI don\u2019t think so. They had no guns. They had no guns.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump has repeatedly falsely claimed<\/a> there were no armed individuals at the riot, but CNN has reported that the people who illegally entered Capitol grounds during the insurrection were\u00a0armed with a wide variety of weapons<\/a>, including\u00a0guns<\/a>,\u00a0stun guns<\/a>,\u00a0knives<\/a>,\u00a0batons<\/a>,\u00a0baseball bats<\/a>,\u00a0axes<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0chemical sprays<\/a>.\n <\/p>\n

\n His statement that no one died is also false<\/a>. One rioter was shot and killed and three other Trump supporters who were at the Capitol on January 6 died<\/a>\u00a0in medical emergencies.\u00a0In addition, Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, who was\u00a0attacked with pepper spray during the riot<\/a>, died after suffering strokes the next day.\n <\/p>\n

\n Trump also repeatedly attempted to deflect Kurtz\u2019s line of questioning by bringing up protests in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle in 2020 and 2021 \u2014 where he falsely claimed that no one was sent to jail.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cNobody\u2019s condoning that either,\u201d Kurtz responded.\n <\/p>\n
