But the gravity of his legal imbroglio is growing more apparent even as he maintains a dominant lead over his GOP challengers.<\/p>\n<p class>In a Miami courtroom closed to news cameras, Trump signed a bond document today that prohibits him from discussing his case with certain witnesses \u2014 an unusual anti-witness-tampering provision added by U.S. Magistrate Judge Jonathan Goodman that the prosecution had not sought.<\/p>\n<p class>He now faces\u00a0trial\u00a0in state court in New York City on charges related to hush money payments to a porn star and\u00a0a 37-count indictment\u00a0in the Miami federal court that charges he kept classified documents and hid them from authorities. Jean Carroll to file an amended defamation suit against Trump seeking at least $10 million, based in part on recent comments Trump made on CNN.<\/p>\n<p class>Carroll made the\u00a0motion for an amended complaint\u00a0after Trump called her a \u201cwhack job\u201d at a CNN town hall in May \u2014 the day after she\u00a0won a $5 million judgment\u00a0against him in a different civil case that alleged sexual abuse and defamation.<\/p>\n<p class>At the CNN event, Trump said, \u201cI never met this woman. Federal investigators decided she had been \u201cextremely careless\u201d in her handling of classified information, but it did not rise to the level of criminality or warrant charges.<\/p>\n<p class>Biden&#8217;s lawyers discovered a &#8220;small number&#8221; of Obama administration documents with classified markings in a locked closet at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement in Washington, the president&#8217;s special counsel said. The White House counsel\u2019s office notified the National Archives the same day, and officials collected the documents the following day and Biden&#8217;s personal attorneys cooperated with the federal officials throughout the process, Sauber said.<\/p>\n<p class>In Trump\u2019s case, the National Archives contacted Trump officials soon after he left office to say some documents appeared to be missing, and after months of back and forth, Trump sent 15 boxes of documents from Mar-a-Lago, some of which contained classified documents. The FBI later obtained information that Trump had more government documents and issued a subpoena for their return, and then learned Trump had not fully complied with the subpoena. While majorities of Democrats and independents say the allegation is believable, 58% of Republicans say it&#8217;s not. <\/p>\n<p class>The poll also found 50% of adults, including 81% of Republicans, believe the indictment is &#8220;politically motivated.&#8221; As many as 36% of all adults disagree that politics are involved. But a similar share of adults, 48%, say that Trump, President Joe Biden and former Vice President Mike Pence have all been &#8220;treated fairly given the circumstances&#8221; surrounding the classified documents found at their homes, compared with 34% who say Trump has been treated unfairly (a majority of Republicans believe he is being treated unfairly). <\/p>\n<p class>Reuters and Ipsos polled 1,005 people in America online from Friday (the day the indictment was unsealed), to yesterday, with a margin of error of +\/- 5.3% (the error margin for the Republican sample is +\/-6.5%). While public opinion could change significantly as the public digests the charges, the poll shows Americans&#8217; early reaction to the decision to charge Trump.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"rcrd14160\" data-testid=\"chat-card-container\">\n<h2 data-testid=\"chat-card-headline\">Crenshaw on Trump: \u2018I don\u2019t owe him defense\u2019 or \u2018excessive critiques\u2019 <\/h2>\n<div data-icid=\"live-blog-card-link\" data-testid=\"chat-card-body-container\">\n<p class>Rep. It\u2019s deeply troubling to read tweets like Clay Higgins that basically tells folks to \u2018<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/donald-trump\/live-blog\/live-updates-trump-indictment-classified-documents-rcna88494#rcrd14001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stand back and stand by<\/a>.\u2019 For those of us who were in the chamber on Jan. 6, we view this from a very dangerous perspective,\u201d said Aguilar, a California Democrat and member of the special House committee that investigated the Capitol attack.<\/p>\n<p class>Noting that Trump will have the chance to make his case in court, Aguilar said, &#8220;The allegations are incredibly troubling and the fact that House Republicans continue to try to come to his rescue just blows our mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class>Some perceived Higgins&#8217; tweet as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/ideas\/archive\/2023\/06\/the-congressman-telling-trump-supporters-to-buckle-up\/674367\/?taid=64861636cf93b30001ec1d0e&#038;utm_campaign=the-atlantic&#038;utm_content=true-anthem&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">call to war<\/a>.
