EPISODE 8 – He Promised Me Work in Lagos

He called again two days later.

This time, I didn’t pretend to hesitate. I picked up on the first ring.

His voice sounded warm, almost familiar now. He asked how I slept. He asked if I had eaten. Small questions, but they landed softly on my tired heart. Nobody had asked me things like that in a long time.

Then he went straight to the point.

He said he had a job for me in Lagos. A good job. Not one of those hustles where people cheat you and disappear. He said it was office work. Nothing stressful. Decent salary.

Before I could ask too many questions, he added something that made my chest tighten.

Accommodation was already arranged.

He said I wouldn’t need to struggle or squat with anybody. I would have a place to stay while I settled down. He said he hated seeing young girls suffer unnecessarily.

“You don suffer reach,” he said softly. “Make life small easy for you.”

I listened in silence. Hope began to bloom quietly inside me, the kind of hope you don’t shout about because you’re afraid it might disappear if you do.

He spoke confidently, like someone who had done this before. He said Lagos rewards seriousness. He said I didn’t need to worry about my past there. Nobody cared where you came from, only what you could do.

That part touched me deeply.

I asked him what kind of company it was. He said he would explain everything when I arrived. He didn’t want to confuse me over the phone.

Something about that should have worried me. But it didn’t. Not then.

He said he would personally make sure I was okay. He said my mother would have wanted that.

That sentence stayed with me long after the call ended.

I sat on my bed, staring at the wall, imagining a different life. A room of my own. A steady income. A place where nobody knew my story.

For the first time in years, the future didn’t feel like a threat.

It felt like a door opening.
