He Promised Me Work In Lagos, Na Trap I Enter (EPISODE 10)

EPISODE 10 – Lagos Welcomed Me with Noise

Lagos did not greet me.

It attacked my senses.

The moment I stepped down from the bus, heat wrapped around my body like a slap. Horns were blaring from every direction. Conductors were shouting destinations. Hawkers pushed items into my face without apology.

I stood there for a few seconds, confused, holding my bag tightly like it was my last sense of security.

This city was loud. Too loud.

Before fear could settle fully, I saw him. He waved from a distance, smiling confidently, like someone who belonged there. Seeing a familiar face — even one I barely knew — calmed me a little.

He took my bag without asking and started walking ahead of me. I had to rush to keep up. Lagos didn’t wait for anybody.

We entered buses. Changed buses. Walked narrow streets filled with shouting, music, generators, and arguments happening all at once.

My head was spinning.

Finally, we reached Agege.

The area was busy, crowded, and restless. Children ran around barefoot. Traders shouted prices. Everyone seemed to be hustling for something.

He took me to the room he had arranged. One small room. Narrow. Hot. A single window that barely let in air.

But to me, it looked like freedom.

I dropped my bag and sat on the bed. My legs were shaking — not from tiredness alone, but from the realization that I had actually done it. I had left.

“Manage for now,” he said. “Once work start, you go upgrade.”

I nodded eagerly. I didn’t mind managing. Compared to the weight I carried back home, this room felt light.

That night, I lay awake listening to Lagos breathe. Generators hummed. Music played somewhere far away. People argued, laughed, lived.

I told myself I was safe. I told myself I had finally started my life.

I didn’t know then that Lagos had not finished welcoming me.

The next morning, I asked about the job — and the answer he gave me didn’t match the promises.
