He Promised Me Work In Lagos, Na Trap I Enter (EPISODE 36)

EPISODE 36 – What If He Comes Back?

Even as Lagos kept moving, and even as I was slowly building my independence, fear never fully left me. It followed me quietly, like a shadow that refused to fade. Every time my phone vibrated, every unexpected knock on the door, my heart skipped.

What if he comes back?

The question lived in my head, stubborn and persistent.

I tried to focus on Ada, the younger girl I was sheltering. I told myself that if I stayed calm, if I stayed strong, I could guide her. I could protect both of us. But healing is not a straight line. One step forward can still come with memories pulling you backward. One peaceful night can suddenly feel unsafe. Lagos does not forgive easily — and neither do past demons.

I became more observant. Things I once ignored now demanded attention. Who lingered too long near my street? Who seemed to notice my routine? Every passing car, every unfamiliar face triggered a small wave of anxiety. My mind replayed memories I did not invite — his calm voice, the gentle promises, the way care slowly turned into control.

I told myself I was stronger now. That if he ever appeared again, I would not freeze. But strength does not erase fear overnight. Healing takes time. Vigilance becomes a shield. Patience becomes survival.

That night, as I locked the door carefully, I turned to Ada.
“We need to stay alert,” I told her quietly. “We are not alone in this city, but we have to be careful. Lagos fit be machine, but we fit survive inside am.”

She nodded, her eyes reflecting both fear and trust.

As I lay awake later, listening to distant horns and voices drifting through the night, I understood something clearly: freedom is not just about escaping a place or a person. Sometimes, it is about learning how to live even when fear still whispers.
